Adam blandly met Melissa’s stormy gaze and tried to pretend he was a gentleman. All he wanted right now was to be his old self again so he could throw her over his shoulder, summon his fiery steed and carry her off to his castle until she was his in every way a woman could be besotted and entangled with her passionate and very eager lover. Once she had agreed never to keep secrets from him again and trust him to keep the wolves at bay for the rest of their fairy tale, they could settle into driving one another crazy for the rest of their lives.

Hmm, perhaps they would detour to Lathbury House first and lock out the rest of the world while they slaked this fierce passion first. It would ruin the romance if they had to stop at several deserted spots along the way to drive one another witless with mutual desire and blissful fulfilment. And too much of him was threatening not to be gentlemanly at all at the very thought of something that was never going to happen. Even if he could be a dashing young blade again, he doubted she would passively agree to forget the rest of the world for his sake.

So, he didn’t come here for any of that then, did he? No, he came because he had sensed her slipping away from him last night and walling herself back into lonely isolation. He’d left her standing in the moonlight watching him warily, as if she knew she had brushed with something dangerous and was determined to avoid it from now on. Somehow he had managed not to turn back to kiss her until they both knew she was right: he was dangerous.

Instead he went home and paced his empty-feeling master bedchamber as he was in no mood to sit in a library that reminded him too acutely of her and everything he wanted to be to her and with her. She had responded hungrily to his kiss the first night, seemed to feel the bite of fiery attraction he had to believe was mutual if he was to stay sane, but she so badly didn’t want to want him.

He sensed a huge hurt had once happened to her more than ever as they spent more time together. It felt as if she had once taken a wild risk that had failed and left her so lonely and bereft she would never willingly take another. She needed the life and light she had denied herself for so long and he intended her to get it. He was determined to pull her out of the shadows, even if he would step back when she was in the land of the living again, because she deserved the best after spending so long alone and lonely, and he certainly wasn’t that.

‘If only I had thought before I spoke,’ she said as lightly as if they had only met once and in public, ‘and I should have looked where I was going and not allowed my tongue to run on wheels.
